Rockstar Donates 5% of In-Game Bills to Covid-19 Relief Efforts

Rockstar Games announced that it will donate 5% of proceeds from in-game purchases of "GTA Online" and "Red Dead Online" to COVID-19 relief efforts. All purchases made between April 1 and the end of May for both games will be eligible.

The initiative applies to regions and countries where Rockstar Games' operating studios are located, including North America, the UK, and India." Small businesses are closing and communities that rely on, but cannot access, government-provided assistance are struggling. The road ahead will be difficult, but we want to help in any way we can," the company wrote on Facebook.

The statement continues: "These funds will be used to support local communities and businesses struggling with the effects of COVID-19. We will provide more information about these efforts as the situation develops."

GTA Online has been hugely profitable for Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two, with GTA 5 alone selling over 120 million copies as of February and Red Dead Redemption 2's first console release in October 2018 has sold more than 29 million copies since then. Meanwhile, according to Take-Two, the audience for each of the online elements is steadily growing: in 2017, SuperData reported that GTA 5 has generated $1.92 trillion in revenue since its 2013 launch, 78 percent of which came from GTA Online in-game purchases. In other words, this 5 percent amount is probably a lot of money.

Intel announced last week that it would contribute up to $6 million to the COVID-19 relief effort, which focuses on "helping local communities," and peripheral manufacturer Razer repurposed part of its manufacturing line to produce face masks. Meanwhile, if you want to use your blessed gaming PC for medical research, here's a good place to start.
