Sometimes it's nice to switch heads and shoot a hail of bullets while hurling yourself into the sky with a jetpack. This 2D side-scrolling multiplayer shooter is the sequel to the classic "Soldat," and both the Soldat 2 demo and the original game are currently available for free on Steam.

Created by the same developer as its predecessor, Michal Marcinkowski, Soldat 2 captures the explosive chaos for which the series is known. The sandbox battle simulator demo has two modes: capture-the-flag and one-man army against a large number of opponents. You can customize your own small army, and naturally, I donned a hot pink helmet and matching pink jet boots.

I'm currently fighting the AI in the demo, but according to Marcinkowsk's developer roadmap, multiplayer access will be available later this year, with a level editor to follow. A full early access build should be ready by the end of 2021.

According to Soldat 2's Steam page, the Early Access version will allow for customization and modding, as well as procedurally generated levels and the infamous ragdoll physics. Once you're done with the demo, check out the original game if you're looking for a dose of nostalgia.
