Nvidia's New RTX Super GPUs Drive Down Prices of Gaming Laptops

Following Intel's new laptop processors, Nvidia has announced the Super Edition of its mobile RTX GPU. On top of that, with new technical perks, the upcoming RTX Super-powered laptops could be the most interesting mobile gaming machines to date.

The desktop versions of the RTX 2070 Super and RTX 2080 Super offer improved performance over their non-Super siblings, and the laptop versions should do the same. I'll refrain from giving the thumbs up to the silicon until I test a few systems myself, but I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what these laptops can do.

The update on the Max-Q side is more interesting news to me; Max-Q is a system that controls the GPU's power consumption and heat generation to reach a sweet spot between performance and heat generation. This is especially important in thin and light laptops.

There are five technologies under the umbrella of the new Max-Q: Dynamic Boost, Low Voltage GDDR6, Advanced Optimus, Next Generation Regulator Efficiency, and DLSS. We have already discussed the improvements of DLSS here, but how this will work in the laptop gaming space It will be interesting to see how this will work in the laptop gaming arena.

Of these new features, Dynamic Boost is probably the one that will have the biggest impact on gaming. Essentially, it monitors GPU and CPU power consumption and performance together and shifts power from the CPU to the GPU when it is needed most. This should result in better frame rates, especially in GPU-bound games.

Meanwhile, Advanced Optimus replaces the initial, somewhat crude Optimus system with a dynamic display switch that can quickly switch between the CPU's integrated graphics and the laptop's discrete graphics, thus improving battery life and improved support for G-Sync and other features.

Nvidia is keen to bring ray-tracing GPUs to more machines and has stated that the sweet spot for RTX 2060-powered laptops will be $999. Note that these are not RTX 2060 Supers in laptops, which have yet to be announced, but the regular type. The following five RTX 2060 laptops are notable in this aspect: the Acer Nitro 5, Asus ROG G512, HP Omen 15, Lenovo Y540, and MSI GF65 Thin.

Laptops using the new take on SuperGPU and/or Max-Q will be launched this month, and all the usual suspects are present and correct-Acer, Asus, Gigabyte, Lenovo, MSI, and Razer, to name a few. There will also be non-Super laptops with the new Max-Q technology, which is a big refresh.

As for pricing, Nvidia was keen to point out that there are laptops available starting at $699. This will get you a machine with a GTX 1650 rather than an RTX 2080 Super, but there continues to be a concerted effort to make machines more affordable overall, including a focus on the $999 RTX 2060 system.

It is worth noting that both Intel and AMD are entering this market. If you are going to buy a new laptop, you might want to give it at least a month. Laptops are going to be much better.
