Apex Legends developer considers cross-play "important"

More than a year has passed since Respawn teased its plans for cross-play in Apex Legends. While not yet confirmed, Respawn reiterated that it believes that cross-play in Apex Legends is an "important" feature for the battle royale.

"We think it's something that's expected in the industry and is important for a game like ours," said General Manager Dusty Welch, as he and Apex Legends Game Director Chad Grenier spoke with Game Informer magazine in a recent interview. [Chad and I are obviously big fans of playing the game both at work and in our free time, and when we get home on Fridays and weekends, we both want to play on different systems. On a personal level, yes, we'd love to party on the weekends. I think that's important."

Obviously something Respawn is still thinking about, but something always needs to be worked on in a live service game. Despite their best efforts, it is possible that nothing will come of this particular concern. If nothing else, it is at least evidence that crossplay has not yet been discounted.

Cross-play used to be an interesting experiment, but it rarely worked. In Modern Warfare, for example, the default is to match players who use the same control scheme. This means that console players will only encounter PC players who also use a controller. In addition, the population in "Apex" is large enough to allow players to choose their groupings in matchmaking, so cross-play is more of an opportunity to link up with friends on other platforms.

When Respawn last talked about cross-play last February, it was accompanied by a note that account purchases and unlocks are not shared between platforms. Given the lack of new comments on that point, it would be prudent to assume that this is still the case today. However, the K/D ratio on my console is garbage, and frankly, I am glad it is the way it is.

Elsewhere, this is a pretty big week for Apex Legends. This time it's all about Bloodhounds, with a new area for hunting NPC beastmen. Perhaps more importantly, Duo Mode will be permanently added to the game, and a map rotation feature will be added, with the Kings Canyon map returning periodically.

Thanks, Comicbook.com.
