Origin PC Brings 12-Core Desktop AMD CPU Power to New Gaming Laptops

AMD continues to make things tough for Intel, as three generations of AMD desktop CPUs have increased the pressure on processor giant Intel, but it still hasn't had a diamond in the rough answer. Now, Intel's traditional laptop dominance is being tested by a new line of AMD-powered gaming notebooks.

The first of this new generation of machines for the Red Team impressed Alan gooey with the processor performance of the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14. However, this machine is powered by an AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS (an 8-core, 16-thread chip), and Origin PC clearly does not consider this to be adequate performance.

AMD's new Ryzen mobile processors stop at 8 cores, but its desktop CPUs have up to 16 cores. This is a real core count and not a misquote from Spinal Tap. However, the Ryzen 9 3950X is a 105W monster processor, a bit too much power for a laptop. In any case, for some... ...Origin PC has announced that its new EON15-X gaming notebook will feature the Ryzen 9 3900, offering 12 Zen 2-core, 24-thread processing power...

This is a complete desktop processor ready for mobile handling, not exactly a thin and light gaming machine like the new MSI GS66 Stealth, but it packs a lot of power into that modest laptop.

The AMD Ryzen 9 3900 is an interesting chip in its own right, but unfortunately not one that any of us can afford on our own. This CPU is only available to system builders, not consumers, and is essentially a 65W 3.1GHz downclocked version of the similar 12-core 3900X. This is an incredibly low TDP, allowing it to be comfortably mounted inside thermally constrained notebooks.

The Origin PC combines a 12-core AMD CPU with up to an Nvidia RTX 2070 Max-Q GPU, tons of memory, and potentially fast storage space. If you're looking for a gaming laptop that can do just about anything, the EON15-X is definitely a more capable workstation. [PC Specialists in the UK sells a Nova 15 with a very similar looking Clevo laptop chassis. Or, if you want a serious AMD-powered monster laptop, you can order one with a 16-core Ryzen 9 3950X.

However, we probably wouldn't recommend it. [There's a reason Origin PC doesn't offer AMD's big boy in the EON15-X, and that's because the machine's cooling goes into overdrive when the Ryzen chips are running at full capacity, getting really hot and really loud.

We will be checking out a 12-core, Ryzen 9 3900-powered version of the PC Specialist Nova 15 in the next few days.
