Intel regains CPU market share from AMD thanks to home workers

Intel is winning back the hearts and minds of PC gamers from AMD... At least that's what the latest Steam Hardware Survey stats read, besides the fact that the March 2020 data has been released and the number of VR gamers using Steam has reached at least 1 million, it seems that Intel has bucked the recent trend and is taking back market share from AMD in the processor space seems to have succeeded in taking back market share from AMD. In fact, 3.1% overall, and only 0.24% if we look at Windows PCs alone, but it is worth noting given the recent trends in the graph.

However, a clearer picture emerges when we dig a little deeper into what is increasing. A look at processor speeds shows a shift from fast CPUs running at 3.7 GHz and above to more modest CPUs running at 3 GHz and below. [In particular, we see an increase in Intel HD graphics 4000s (up 2.95%) on the DirectX11 GPU list and Intel HD Graphics 3000s (up 2.78%) on the DirectX 10 list.

This basically seems to be more laptops connected to Steam this month compared to last month, which makes a lot of sense given what is happening in the world today and the fact that many people are telecommuting.

Now more laptops are being purchased and many work laptops are being brought home. The fact that people take little game breaks from time to time is also not surprising. If you're looking for a little break in your telecommuting days, don't forget to check out the best PC games while you're at it.

Another thing to note in this survey is that Intel on Linux is up 1.23%. This again bucks the trend, but fits the same theory that home workers at least have Steam installed on their work machines.
