Update: As expected, Assassin's Creed 2 is now available for free download on Uplay. It's over a decade old and no longer supports online functionality, but it's still good stuff, so get it before April 17 and make it permanent.

Original: If nothing else, it's a good time for free games. There are plenty of them being given away to pass the time. Wizards of the Coast is giving away tons of D&D materials (including the children's primer "Adventures with Muk," which includes the great character sheets I used in my last game, and the sandbox campaign "The Lost Mines of Van Derbur"), and now you can get the Epic Store to get both "Sherlock Holmes: Crime and Punishment" and "Closer to the Sun."

As Daniel Ahmad discovered on Twitter, Ubisoft (which recently distributed Child of Light and Rayman Legends) is about to distribute Assassin's Creed 2 for free on the German site mydealz.de It seems to be free.

The game, which brings us Ezio Auditore da Firenze and features a character named Mario who introduces himself as "It's-a me, Mario," will be available for free on Uplay on Tuesday, April 14. The game, which features a character named Mario who introduces himself by saying, "It's me, Mario. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Revelations will also be available at a discounted price.
