Next major Windows 10 update enters final testing, coming next month

The first of two major updates to Windows 10 this year will be released soon, and because Microsoft has eschewed more creative titles for these feature upgrades in favor of categorizing them by month and year, this is now officially Windows 10 May 2020 update (previously known simply as 20H1).

A new preview build appeared yesterday in the Windows Insider program, and according to Brandon LeBlanc, senior product manager for the program, it appears to be the last build before general availability.

The program includes last-minute bug fixes, including a strange quirk that prevents the rear camera flash from working on some devices. Inevitably, some unfixed bugs will be on the build that will be pushed to the public next month, but hopefully there will be no major problems.

Interestingly, Microsoft has encountered some glitches with the Mixed Reality headset in the May 2020 update. It is possible that these issues will not be resolved before the general release.

"The May 2020 update may cause Windows Mixed Reality to not work properly for many users; if you use Windows Mixed Reality regularly, the May 2020 via Release Preview We recommend holding off on the update for now; we are working on a fix to be ready for release in early May," said LeBlanc.

At this point, the best thing to do is wait a month for the May 2020 update to arrive. But if you really want to preview it in advance, the latest test build is as sophisticated as the one provided by the Insider program. You can get it by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Program and clicking the Start button.

The May 2020 update improves Windows Search (better typo analysis and finding files), updates the Performance tab in Task Manager, and adds drive types (instead of simple "Disk 1" and "Disk 2" labels SSD or HDD), and GPU temperature monitoring will be added.
