'Battlefield 5' Ends, But There's One More Update

All wars have to end eventually. Perhaps I'm no expert, but it seems that "Battlefield 5" is no exception, and DICE is planning to send "Battlefield 5" to a nice farm and spend the rest of its days there relaxing. There will still be special events and small updates, but it looks like the beginning of the end for the multiplayer shooter.

Chapter 6, which sent players into the jungle, will end on April 29, but there is still a standalone update planned for June. New weapons, game tweaks, and vague "content" will be added; DICE is also working on a custom community game update. Senior Producer Ryan MacArthur said that the team is still shifting to telecommuting, so keep an eye out for progress updates in case things change.

Details on the final update are vague, but DICE has released screenshots of the new map.

So that's what's next for "Battlefield 5," but what about the series? While neither EA nor DICE has hinted at what's next, we do know that they have plans for the series. Last October, CEO Andrew Wilson told investors that the next "Battlefield" would appear during the 2022 fiscal year, which begins in April 2021.

Of course, those plans may have changed; back in 2019, Wilson hinted that "Battlefield 5" still had a lot to offer, teasing a Pacific front and adding that the team was thinking about what the future held. And now, six months later, that is coming to an end. This was also before developers were forced to work from home, and who knows where the next Battlefield will be left.

Surprisingly, the previously maligned Star Wars Battlefront 2 has a longer tail, having been released earlier in 2017 and threatened to be buried in the furor over its business model. Instead, EA made some pretty big changes not only to Battlefront, but to the overall game, which has grown into a great shooter. This year, the company returned to the original trilogy, and there is no reason to believe that there won't be more in the future.
