Noctua confirms that many existing coolers will work with Intel's next generation CPUs

Noctua makes some of the best CPU coolers available, including the NH-D15. Good news: this cooler is compatible with Intel's upcoming Comet Lake-S processors despite the introduction of a new socket; many of Noctua's other coolers are also compatible, and some of the incompatible coolers can be made to work with the upgrade kit.

Intel plans to introduce a new LGA 1200 socket for Comet Lake-S. This socket has not been officially announced, but Noctua has substantially confirmed this rumor by clearly indicating "which Noctua CPU coolers are compatible with the LGA 1200". The full list can be found on Noctua's website.

The list includes all Noctua coolers that already work with LGA 115x sockets, including LGA 1156, 1155, 1151, and 1150. Noctua's list suggests that compared to LGA 115x motherboards, the LGA 1200 motherboard's It suggests that there is no change in the mounting mechanism. If so, existing coolers from other manufacturers should work just fine.

Keep in mind that we are only talking about physical compatibility; what cooling requirements Comet Lake-S will bring is unknown. As previously mentioned, a Comet Lake CPU spanning 10 cores and 20 threads will consume the same power as an RTX 2080.

As for high-end CPU coolers built for overclocking, this will probably not be an issue. However, who knows what will happen to coolers with inferior performance.

As for free upgrade kits, Noctua is offering them to owners of certain cooler models. A total of 11 models are eligible. To claim the upgrade kit, you must complete this form and provide valid proof of purchase (scan, photo, or screenshot of invoice) for both the cooler and motherboard.

Noctua also mentions coolers that are not eligible for the free mounting kit but can be upgraded. For these coolers, you will need to purchase the NM-i115x upgrade kit yourself ($7.95 on Amazon, via Noctua as a marketplace seller).
