Travis Scott's "Fortnite" show hits record number of players

Fortnite hosted a little musical event last night. A few fans enjoyed an intimate show of Travis Scott's new song "Astronomical". That's 12.3 million people.

This is the highest number of simultaneous players for a battle royale and about 2 million more than Marshmello's EDM performance last year. At the time, it was certainly the most popular, though the in-game concert was touted as a history-making performance, despite the fact that it had been around for a long time. Until Scott's performance.

I'd had enough of Fortnite and had never even heard of Travis Scott until this week. It was basically a big promotion for the musician's new music, and I had stayed away from these meta events altogether since the strange decision to make an important Star Wars announcement a Battle Royale-only event. But it was really great. I was a convert.

It was a huge improvement over the Marshmello show because it wasn't trying to emulate a real concert, and while there was certainly some flair to the EDM event, at the end of the day it was just a guy in a stupid mask standing on stage and doing what they do at regular shows, occasionally, There was even a scene where he demanded that the players show him their favorite emote. Ugh.

Scott's performance, on the other hand, was unlike any concert I have ever seen. It was a cosmic spectacle of epic proportions,

with Scott taking off his giant shirt to become a teleporting avatar, transforming the map around him.

It utilized Fortnite in a way that Marshmello's show did not. This game, with its robots fighting monsters, space-time ripping apart, and many other spectacular events, really needed to be done in a big way. And it did happen. It provided something that you would never see in an actual live event. As a result, I am genuinely looking forward to seeing what the next collaboration has in store.

If you missed it, there are still more performances to come. Future performances will take place a little earlier in the day, when fewer people are sleeping soundly, and may break the simultaneous attendance record again.
