Total War: Shogun 2 is now available for free on Steam.

Update: Today, the price of Total War: Shogun 2 has been reduced on Steam, allowing players to play Archaea Shogun, set across Japan, for free. The promotion begins today at 6 p.m. (10 a.m. ET) and ends at the same time on May 1, ending at 6 p.m. (10 a.m. ET) on May 1, when the game will be available for free on Steam, with the first game set to be released on May 1 at 6 p.m. (10 a.m. ET).

Sega will also hold a "Total War" sale starting at the same time. Unfortunately, it does not include the main game or DLC for the Three Kingdoms or Rome, nor does it include the obviously fantastical Warhammer.

SteamDB lists the weekends when free promotions are available on Steam so that you can know in advance which weekends will be free on Steam. It also lists the games that will have free promotions, and shows that "Total War: Shogun 2" will be given away to those who purchase it between April 27 and May 1.

Shogun 2 is nine years old now, but it remains my favorite of the historical Total War games. It features a perfect map size that feels conquerable without spending hundreds of hours on it, and a theme that brings to life the blocks of troops marching across the map. Last year, Malindi Hetfeld recalled how beautiful and ambitious the game was.

If you want something free right now, here's a list of what's currently being offered for $0. This week Ubisoft will also be distributing Assassin's Creed 2, but this will be through Uplay, not Steam.
