18+ Rating for "Cyberpunk 2077" Leaked in Brazil; Developer Says "We Don't Mess Around

Last week, Brazil's rating system announced that CD Projekt's upcoming RPG Cyberpunk 2077 is 18+ in the country. The listing was quickly removed but recorded on Reddit for posterity; Reddit captured an image of the rating and also provided a handy translation of the content listing.

Some of the translations are a bit rough, but there is no doubt that the list is comprehensive." The "characteristics" range from foul language and blood to mutilation, intense sexual relations, suicide, and "cruelty. The mitigating factor is "nothing," according to the list, while drug consumption and "intense sexual relations" (translated as "graphic" rather than "intense" might be more accurate, but that's how Google translates it) are "aggravating" factors. In short, at least in Brazil, Cyberpunk 2077 is "not recommended for those under 18 years of age."

CD Projekt has not officially commented on the leak, but lead quest designer Pawel Sasko has given his personal thoughts on the leak on Twitter, and it sure looks legit:

ESRB, PEGI, Australian Classification Board have yet to post a rating for "Cyberpunk 2077," and it will be very interesting to see where it ends up on their charts. The studio announced late last year that the game will feature motion-captured sex scenes from a first-person perspective.

Generally speaking, the ESRB is OK with violent content, but sex is another matter entirely: the Mature (M) rating allows "sexual content," but "graphic sexual content" will receive an AO rating, which is a big problem for game This is a big problem for game makers who are trying to develop a mass market.

Anything goes on Steam, but major retailers will not stock AO games, and neither Xbox Live nor the PlayStation Store will allow them. So even out-of-the-box developers like Rockstar are trying hard to push their games into the M category: if you want to sell games to a niche audience, you can't put an AO rating on them.

Interestingly, CD Projekt Red studio boss Adam Budowski said earlier this month that "most" of the rating boards have already rated Cyberpunk 2077. Despite the eyebrow-raising list of cybercontent, it is unlikely that AO will be released; according to Videogame Geek, other games that will be 18 banned in Brazil include "Beyond: Two Souls," "God of War: Ascension," "Fallout: New Vegas", "Call of Juarez", and "GTA" were also mostly 18 banned.

According to the "Sex and Nudity" section of the English-language "Practical Guide" to Game Ratings in Brazil, the 16-and-over rating for "intense sexual intercourse" that Cyberpunk 2077 was leaked to feature includes "ultra-real or prolonged non explicit sex"-e.g., "scenes that show details such as sweat and orgasms but no penetration"; meeting the ESRB's M rating for "sexual content" should not be too difficult without tripping the "graphic sexual content" line requiring an AO.

Cyberpunk 2077 is currently scheduled for release on September 17. Despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, CD Projekt recently stated that it plans to meet that date.

Thanks, USgamer.
