General
This add-in card allows you to remove the M.2 SSD while your gaming PC is running.

Depending on when you built your PC, you may not have an M.2 slot to add a sophisticated, high-speed NVMe SSD to your setup. While upgrading the motherboard is an option, it is never a quick and easy solution, and Icy Docks solves this dilemma with the new ToughArmor MB840M2P-B, an add-in card for M.2 drives.

Icy Docks is not the first company to offer such a product, but this one stands out in that it supports hot-swapping of drives (via Tom's Hardware). This means that M.2 SSDs can be added or removed without leaving the PC powered on.

This feature is not available when the SSD is used as the main drive, but is fine for secondary storage. The removable drive tray requires no tools, just snap the drive in and slide the tray into the AIC. Much easier than replacing a motherboard.

The enclosure is made of aluminum and acts as a huge heat sink. A thermal pad is also included to help take heat away from the SSD and move it to the aluminum enclosure.

Icy Dock designed the ToughArmor card for PCIe 3.0 x4 slots, but it also supports longer x8 and x16 slots. It also supports a wide range of M.2 SSDs, including WD's SN750 and Samsung's 970 Pro. Icy Dock's compatibility list includes drives from 30 companies.

The big question mark here is the price; Icy Dock has not revealed a suggested retail price, and it does not appear to be in stock anywhere yet. For reference, the 2.5" SATA version sells for $64.99 on Amazon, which is a bit high. Add-in cards for M.2 drives that do not support hot-swapping usually sell for around $15 at the lower end of the price range.
