In Call of Duty: Warzone, collecting in-game cash is a top priority. With cash, you can buy a variety of items that will set you apart from your competitors; without it, you'll have to hope for better luck. One of the best ways to maintain funds is to take on contracts, which are essentially side missions. Scavenger contracts, for example, can be earned by simply opening three supply boxes in sequence (easy). Bounties, on the other hand, require hunting and killing randomly targeted players.
The latest update to Warzone, released yesterday, adds a new type of contract called Most Wanted: instead of being sent out to ground a random opponent, you volunteer as tribute to all the other teams still in play. Why would you do such a ridiculous thing? Because if you survive for five minutes, all of your fallen teammates are reassigned. Since it usually costs $4,500 per teammate to resurrect (in in-game currency, of course), this can be a very large reward, especially if your squad is wiped out.
Players were initially enthusiastic about this new contract type, but that changed when it became clear that bounty contracts were simultaneously removed from the game. There is no mention of this change in the patch notes, and it could be argued that bounties still exist (only that what is awarded has changed), but the reaction was not positive.
There is even a meme.
One of the main arguments from players is that while traditional bounties discouraged camping by giving players an incentive to mix it up early, Most Wanted has the opposite effect: players who challenge Most Wanted have no They have no reason to do so.
"I often see Most Wanted contracts left on the map because they are super situational and not that much fun," wrote redditor Nicky_G8.
"The timer is also way too long and who wants to spend 5 minutes running and hiding from the action.
Some players defended the removal of bounties: redditor tdvx pointed out that bounties are really risk-free and give teams an advantage even if not achieved.
"Knowing the exact position of a player/squad and getting that easy kill to get the bounty, or just knowing the exact position if you don't want to risk it, can make the deal fail without any sacrifice. 'It was unbalanced. I killed more bounties than I was killed, but it was never a fair system, even before the rewards for surviving were reduced."
Redditor Holmesy5192 said that the Most Wanted contract is friendly to new players and gives them a chance to revive their squads simply by surviving in the late game, but of course that approach is not universally popular with the player base either.
"It's a change to help the casuals again," redditor Fortnitexs wrote. 'This game is so beginner friendly it's insane. Good players go to bounty contracts to chase kills, so the noobs who camp keep getting killed. With this new change, they can stay hidden and camp their way to victory."
Depending on how the player base continues to react, this change could be undone fairly quickly: a few weeks ago, Activision replaced Warzone's Trios mode with Quads, but two days later brought back "winsome threesomes" We have asked Activision for their perspective on this situation and will update if we hear back.
