Next "Battlefield" to be released next year

With the release of "Battlefield 5" and "Star Wars Battlefront 2" now confirmed, Electronic Arts has narrowed down the official release date for the next "Battlefield" game. Previously, company executives had offered a vague release date of 2021-2022, but it turns out that the game will be released next year.

The publisher told IGN that "the studio [DICE] is focused on the future of Battlefield, which will be delivered to players in 2021. Whether that is "Battlefield 6" (or "Battlefield 2") or another "hardline" spin-off has not been stated, but DICE wants to bring a mainline Battlefield game to next-gen consoles as soon as possible.

This would be the longest hiatus in the series' history, likely due to the relatively dismal sales of "Battlefield 5"; EA CEO Andrew Wilson expressed disappointment with the game's launch, blaming the delay on the fact that initial sales were a million units below company expectations

"The game's delay was not the only reason for the delay.

"Battlefield 5" received its last content update this week in the form of "Into the Jungle," but of course the servers will continue to run for years to come.
