Cyberpunk 2077 Receives R18+ Rating in Australia, Easing Concerns About Screening Ban

Cyberpunk 2077 has sex, drugs, suicide, and cruelty, which can be quite stressful if you are Australian. The prospect that the game might be denied classification or censored in some way has been a source of anxiety for some time. But now we can rest easy.

Australian publisher Bandai Namco has assigned an R18+ rating to Cyberpunk 2077, which is scheduled for release on September 17. Namco Bandai also sent in box art for the PC version of the game. Note that the rating warns against "high-impact themes, sex, violence, and references to sexual violence."

The Australian Classification Board is notorious for banning games and forcing modifications; DayZ was temporarily banned last year for introducing marijuana as a gameplay incentive, and We Happy Few has faced similar problems. For the Commission, inciting drug use is a major contraindication, but drug use in general is not.

Earlier this week, Adam Budowski, head of studios at CD Projekt Red, confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 is "already rated by most rating boards around the world."
