Nintendo to take action against PC port of Super Mario 64

As Wes explained earlier this week, someone recently sneaked out a full port of Mario 64 for the PC. It runs natively without an emulator, at high resolutions up to 4K, with full support for the Xbox controller, although textures tend to break up when you get that high. It's unrealistic to expect to play high-resolution, high-frame-rate Mario 64 on a PC."

Unfortunately, it seems difficult for others to do it; according to TorrentFreak, Nintendo has initiated a copyright infringement claim against the file-hosting site that handles the game.

"The copyrighted work is Nintendo's video game 'Super Mario 64,' which contains audiovisual works, software, and depictions of fictional characters covered by U.S. Copyright Registration No. PA[REDACTED], covered by the PA[REDACTED] issue. Includes audiovisual works, software, and fictional character depictions covered by PA[REDACTED]." The reported files contain unauthorized derivative works based on Nintendo's works."

Gameplay videos on YouTube are also reportedly being targeted for removal, and there are many more.

Not surprisingly, the games themselves are still widely available if one is willing to do a little searching. Nintendo is notoriously eager to protect its own assets, so it will likely continue to play whack-a-mole with file-sharing sites for some time yet.

We have asked Nintendo for comment on this copyright notice and will update if we hear back.
