AMD, Intel, Nvidia May Exit Computex 2020

AMD, Intel, and Nvidia are unlikely to attend Computex 2020, according to sources. The tech show, held in Taiwan, is usually one of the biggest events on the tech calendar and a hotbed of product announcements and launches. However, the ongoing global pandemic and related safety measures may cause the companies closest to PC builders to cancel their plans.

Computex, normally held in early June, has been postponed to September 28-30 as a precautionary measure. Several countries have chosen to relax their measures to varying degrees, but there is still little to suggest that hosting a major event in September will be permitted or even sensible and safe.

This could throw a wrench in the works for AMD, which is reportedly unsure whether to proceed with its Computex plans, DigiTimes reports. The company was said to be expected to make several significant announcements at the show, most notably the AMD Ryzen 4000 CPU with Zen 3 architecture. However, there was no official announcement from the Red Team regarding plans for Zen 3 or RDNA 2.0 beyond a vague promise of "2020," and whether we hear it at Computex or via live stream, it seems that the company still plans to deliver on its promises.

Similarly, Intel and Nvidia, along with motherboard and graphics card makers like Gigabyte and MSI, are said to be wavering on whether to attend the tech show. Asus is said to be exhibiting as originally planned.

Everyone agrees that it is most important that attendees and staff be able to enjoy Computex without putting their own safety or the safety of others at risk. If that requires delaying, staggering, or completely shifting the online product announcements from their scheduled release window, so be it.

Nvidia recently moved its Graphics Technology Conference (GTC) online, replacing it with an in-person event, and Jen-Hsun Huang is scheduled to give the keynote at GTC this Thursday, where he will present the Nvidia Ampere graphics architecture at the GTC keynote scheduled for this Thursday.
