Earlier today, 2K Games released a teaser for the Mafia Trilogy, showing off "gussied up" clips of Mafia 2 and Mafia 3. It's clear that it's a remaster, but we'll have to wait for the official announcement to find out what exactly it's all about. One thing that did bother me, though, is that I can't seem to find the first game.

Apparently not, for shortly after news of the Mafia trilogy broke, "Mafia: Definitive Edition" appeared on the Microsoft Store (now removed). And it's definitely a remastered edition: the screens shown are truly amazing. The graphics of the original version of Mafia were so highly acclaimed that in an enthusiastic review in 2002 I wrote, "It is rare in this day and age to be truly impressed by the graphics of a game, but much of the early game will be spent simply admiring the scenery," but now, 20 years later, that glory has has faded. But after 20 years, that glory has faded, and the Definitive Edition looks to recapture all that sweet eye candy: these screens are gorgeous.

We don't know much about the gameplay changes at this point, but the story of a cab driver caught up in Prohibition-era organized crime appears to be enhanced with new content. According to the Microsoft Store listing, "Mafia" will be "faithfully recreated" in the Definitive Edition, with "expanded story, gameplay, and original score. It has also been announced that a Definitive Edition of Mafia 2 and Mafia 3 will be available: purchasing the Mafia Definitive Edition will unlock Tommy Angelo's suit and cab from the currently unreleased game. According to the Microsoft Store page, "Mafia: Definitive Edition" will be released on August 28. 10] The promise of knowing more details has yet to materialize.
