Ubisoft Warns of Possible Delay for One of Its Upcoming Games

Ubisoft announced in February that it plans to release five "triple-A" games during the company's 2020-21 fiscal year, which begins April 1. However, the company warned that one of those games could be pushed back to the following year, largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced developers to work from home and created a "higher level of uncertainty."

Neither Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot nor CFO Frederic Duguet commented on the possibility of a postponement during today's earnings call, but they did say that in case the "release of a AAA title" is postponed to 2021-22, Ubisoft is preparing for next year's The possibility is so great that Ubisoft has taken the unusual step of giving a range of financial targets for the next fiscal year in case it delays the "release of AAA titles" to 2021-22, CEO Guillemot said in his year-end report.

"The COVID-19 crisis has created a lot of uncertainty and calls for caution. The transition to telecommuting has had a short-term impact on production, but will likely last only a few weeks for the time being. The next few months will provide more clarity on whether the release plan can be maintained."

Gilmo went a little deeper into the possibility of a postponement during the earnings call, stating that with five major games in development, "if one game takes a few weeks, it could affect the others."

"We are certainly cautious," he said. We don't know what the next few months will bring, so even though our team is working hard to ensure that we address mocap, testing, and all the other potential issues, that's why circumstances could lead to further delays."

"We are conservative," Duguet added.

"But as Yves said, we're generally cautious.

Four of the five games expected to be released this year have been revealed, with "Watch Dogs Legion," "Rainbow Six Quarantine," and "Gods and Monsters" previously known, and "Assassin's Creed Valhalla" was announced last week; "Watch Dogs Legion," "Rainbow Six Quarantine" and "Gods and Monsters" are currently in a "polishing period" and "Valhalla" is scheduled to launch during the 2020 holiday season Therefore, it is the most likely game to be postponed to the next quarter.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 and Skull and Bones were not mentioned and remain in limbo: Ubisoft postponed Skull and Bones to "2019-20 or later" in its 2018-19 year-end report and BG&E2 was 3 2018, where it last showed up but didn't make a particularly strong impression; it's possible we'll hear something about these, or the fifth game Ubisoft is preparing, in July, when the E3-style "Ubisoft Forward" showcase takes place.
