Grand Theft Auto 5 Giveaway Causes Havoc at Epic Game Store

Update: Epic is being cautious, saying it's "almost a non-issue," but we'll be keeping our fingers crossed in case things go sideways again.

You might think that most people who want the seven-year-old "Grand Theft Auto 5" would already have it, but apparently not. The game became available for free on the Epic Games Store today and immediately broke ground.

The moment the new free items went live, the store began spitting out 505 errors; Epic acknowledged the overload on Twitter and asked everyone to please be patient while they work to fix the problem.

While the problem seemed to be resolving itself nicely, some users began encountering more exotic issues, such as erratic changes in language settings. Our own Joseph Knoop of Fortnitesmith was surprised to find that after numerous attempts to access the store, it had suddenly switched to Spanish.

Epic says they will release an update once the problem is resolved, and we will let you know when that happens. For now, good luck and Godspeed, and remember that GTA5 is free until May 21, so you have a little time to get it.
