Club Penguin Clone, where "penguin e-sex" is rampant, to close.

Once upon a time, Disney's Club Penguin was a popular digital hangout for kids. Its content filters and moderators restricted what children could touch in ways so severe that speedrunners competed for records on how fast they could be banned.

After Club Penguin's closure, inevitably clones sprang up, the largest of which was Club Penguin Online, which, as the BBC reports, was not so strict. Club Penguin Online was not so strict, as reported by the BBC. They found less family-friendly arctic animation, with players indulging in "penguin e-sex" and some servers disabling content filters: "One player invited the BBC to their igloo, which was decorated with the n-word It was decorated with the n-word.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, online gaming population numbers skyrocketed, and Club Penguin Online was no exception. It caught the attention of Disney's lawyers and a DMCA was sent last week. It is now offline, and the BBC notes that "one man involved with the site has been arrested on suspicion of possessing child abuse images."

When the original Club Penguin was shut down, we spoke with community manager Bobby Rieger and asked him what he thought about the inevitable clones. She said, "It's a little scary because a lot of the third parties aren't as secure as Club Penguin."
