Terraria Mod Loader Comes to Steam, Developer "Gives the Key to the Fans".

Terraria may have received its final update, but it still has years to go. The Journey's End update, released on Saturday, added monstrous new items and a new, ultra-customizable Journey mode, pushing player numbers on Steam to an all-time high. After this update, Terraria's developers will finally move on to a new project, nine years after its release. However, they are preparing to continue adding new features to the game by adding a community-made mod loader to Steam.

The tModLoader is available for free download on Steam, and in the future will add Steam Workshop support, making Terraria's mods available on Steam for the first time. Until now, mods were only available from external mod sites and tModLoader was a generic tool. While fully integrated official mod support is not feasible in Terraria's codebase, tModLoader has faithfully served as a "bridge" between the main game and the amazing player-generated mod library that exists for Terraria. With this launch, we're making mods more visible and accessible for Terraria." [tModLoader currently supports version 1.3.5 of Terraria, the latest version before the Journey's End update, but developers are already working on supporting version 1.4 of Journey's End; the mod itself is the latest version It will take time for the mod itself to catch up to the latest version.

The tModLoader is truly a community-driven project, and since it is open source, you can follow the development changes on Github. And now the same can be said for Terraria itself, which will live on as a mod platform for years to come.

"The Re-Logic team felt strongly that with Journey's End being the last major content update for Terraria, there was no better way to close things out than to hand the keys over to the fans," the developers wrote on Steam. "With tModLoader and the stable foundation of 1.4, modders are free to interpret and experience the game as they wish. We can't wait to see where you will take us in this wonderful world we have created!"
