AMD Ryzen 4000 test chip already appears to be as fast as Zen 2

Following the growing number of "Renoir" APU rumors, more details about the "Vermeer" are coming to light.

However, before the "Vermeer," another piece of information about the Ryzen 4000 "Renoir" APU has been posted on Igor's Lab, which could be important information.

Infinity Fabric is a special AMD source for chiplets and ...... No, it controls the communication between almost everything in the system. It is one of the reasons why AMD chips demand faster DDR4 memory than Intel chips.

However, there is a limit to how fast the Infinity fabric can operate, and we simply cannot keep throwing in faster memory: on Ryzen 3000 series chips, it is 1,800 MHz (which corresponds to an effective frequency of 3,600 MHz for DDR4). If one wants to use faster memory, it is possible, but not at a 1:1 ratio.

Raising the Infinity Fabric clock to 2,000 MHz means that these new APUs can support DDR 4000 MHz RAM. This also suggests that "Renoir" may be an upgrade beyond what we originally thought, and may point to improved IPC (Instructions Per Cycle) among other good things.

Next is "Vermeer," which is the next CPU family based on the AMD Zen 3 architecture, although the refrigerator may not have a list of processor code names pasted on it.

According to Igor's Lab, an early version of the "Vermeer" has already been tested and is rumored to be starting to reveal details on base and turbo clocks, core and thread counts, along with a new unified L3 cache.

There are some details of an 8-core, 16-thread CPU with a base clock of 4 GHz and boosted to 4.6 GHz; there is also a 16-core, 32-thread chip with a base clock of 3.7 GHz, boosted to 4.6 GHz as well.

These are frequencies for the early A0 version of the chip, and these frequencies may increase in the next revision. Incidentally, the current 16-core, 32-thread Ryzen 9 3950X has a base clock of 3.5 GHz and a boost clock of 4.7 GHz; the "Vermeer" is expected to exceed this.

The new chip is also expected to feature the new and improved Infinity Fabric, but nothing concrete on that front yet.
