Bots and Ranked Matches Coming to PUBG

After a week on the test server, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds update 7.2 has been released.

Ranked matches put squads on randomly selected 64-player maps from Erangel, Miramar, and Sanhok with adjusted rules. For example, red zones, crossbows, and motor gliders are excluded, and safe areas are reduced at an adjusted rate.

Starting today, you can drop into a new mode, either third-person or first-person, and begin to rank up until the end of the season. However, you must complete a placement match before earning your first rank. In future seasons, previous results will be taken into account to determine the starting rank.

Master is the highest ranked division, and to reach this division, one must earn RP from matches that can raise or lower one's rank. At the end of the season, players are rewarded according to their highest rank.

At Gold V or higher, you will get a set of ranked skins that change each season. It is unclear as to what makes the skins stand out, but PUBG Corp has stated that "even if you don't remember exactly which season they are from, you will be able to tell at a glance that you are using a ranked reward skin."

Emblems and nameplates are not as attractive as skins, but you will get something for just finishing a placement match. The top 500 players will receive "something special" in the design of their nameplates and emblems.

To keep the matches clean, players may need to verify their accounts with phone verification and reach a minimum level in Survival Mastery. To discourage players from trying to skip maps and to avoid randomness in map selection, PUBG Corp. has also added a timer that prevents players from immediately re-queuing.

While the new mode is the centerpiece, it's not the only change: 7.2 also features improvements to the shotgun, increasing accuracy, damage, and speed and closing the gap between the M416 and other ARs.

The update also heralds the arrival of the dreaded bots. Bots are now appearing in regular games rather than ranked matches, apparently to give players easy kills and hone their skills; PUBG Corp admits that bots are a "controversial" feature, and so far this addition has not exactly been welcomed.

You can check out the 7.2 update now. See the patch notes for a full list of changes.
