First 8TB M.2 SSD could eliminate the need to uninstall games

Sabrent is launching an 8TB M.2 solid state drive, and as long as Steam's library continues to grow, it can't come too soon.

Whatever Sabrent ultimately charges for this product, those who can afford it will be getting the only 8TB M.2 SSD on the market. In fact, this SSD has twice the capacity of the next largest model. However, the M.2 form factor (shaped like a stick of gum) is sleeker and requires no cabling.

They can also be faster, as in this case; M.2 SSDs come in SATA and NVMe, and this SSD falls into the latter category; the 8TB model is part of Sabrent's Rocket Q family, which features a PCIe 3.0 x4 interface ( via TomsHardware) joins the family.

Sabrent has not provided many details about the 8TB model at this time, but we can assume from the rest of the Rocket Q family that it is relatively fast. The breakdown is as follows:

As is often the case, the larger capacities are faster than the smaller drives, especially compared to the 500GB models.

The Rocket Q family uses QLC (quad-level cell) NAND flash memory combined with Sabrent's RKT 303 controller (which TH believes is actually a rebadged Phison E12S controller); Anandtech s friends pointed out earlier this year that the mainstream SSD market is beginning to shift from TLC (triple-level cell) to QLC NAND. This will lead to higher capacity SSDs, and other SSD makers will no doubt follow suit with their own 8TB models relatively soon.

However, the overall price of NAND flash memory will need to come down further before these high-capacity M.2 drives become a reality for mainstream buyers. For example, a 4TB Rocket Q costs $749.99 at Newegg. For a gaming PC, it is not yet worth paying double that price, let alone for an 8TB model. [The lowest price on Newegg is Western Digital's Blue 4TB SSD for $519.99.

If you want to stretch your dollars, your best bet is to buy a 500GB to 2TB SSD and combine it with an HDD if you need a lot of storage.
