Why travel by pushbike to Los Santos when you can travel by fighter jet? Because it's "exercise". A new GTA 5 mod makes the game compatible with smart bike trainers. A smart bike trainer is essentially an indoor exercise bike, complete with technology that simulates real-world terrain in a virtual environment, among other things. An example of compatible software is Zwift, a sort of MMO for people who are serious about cycling.
The exercise and training potential is obvious, but just riding around Los Santos on an actual bike sounds like a lot of fun. Using wireless signals, the mod can read the force with which you pedal and apply it in-game. Likewise, the terrain in the game, such as inclines and descents, and the roughness of the surface (or off-road) can be communicated to the smart bike. In other words, those who are not physically fit may want to stay in downtown Los Santos and stay away from Mount Chiliado.
There is one drawback: you need a keyboard to actually steer the bike. However, there is a good solution to this. The mod has a "course reader" that follows a predetermined route depending on the difficulty level. While this does not perfectly explain the instability of Los Santos traffic, the mod notes that the autopilot feature is "set to the highest driving skill level available in the game, so there is no chance of running into anything."
GT Bike V is the work of modder Makinolo, and a video of the mod in action is embedded below; it generates FIT files and is compatible with cycling and running tracking apps such as Strava.
