This 8K Holographic Monitor Makes You Dream of the Future of Gaming

The fascination with holographic games has been around for decades, and was in arcade parlors as early as 1991. That was when Sega introduced a game called "Time Traveler," a cheesy western/sci-fi mish-mash that featured holograms of live-action actors projected onto a specially designed arcade cabinet. Now, nearly 30 years later, a company called Looking Glass Factory is selling 8K holographic displays for PCs. [Aside from whatever requirements hologram rendering may meet, there are no consumer GPUs that can adequately handle 8K gameplay anyway. Aside from whatever requirements hologram rendering may meet, there is no consumer GPU that can adequately handle 8K gameplay anyway.

As TechCrunch discovered, the "world's largest, highest-resolution holographic display" is intended for professional applications such as medical imaging and 3D design. However, the gap between professional and consumer applications may not be as wide as you think.

"Having access to a glasses-free holographic display is a game-changer and an exciting prospect for teams involved in immersive computer graphics, visualization, and content creation. Looking Glass holographic displays offer unparalleled realism, and we look forward to seeing the innovations that will come from supporting Unreal Engine-generated content," said Kim Libreri, CTO of Epic Games

Sales Point.

One of the selling points is the ability to get 3D visuals without having to wear a VR or AR headset; the 32-inch monitor, called the "8K Immersive Display," "updates at up to 60 fps within a single 3D display system with light fields and using a unique combination of volumetric display technologies."

Looking Glass states that the unique light field produces 3D content from 45 different perspectives. Depending on where several people are standing around the display, any 3D content can be viewed from different perspectives.

Interestingly, the hardware requirements are not as steep as how this is actually envisioned to be used. Looking Glass recommends an Intel Core i5 processor or higher, 4GB or more RAM, and a GeForce GTX 1060 or higher (running on a graphics card capable of outputting 2560x1600 or higher).

With these specs, you won't be able to enjoy the game in 8K without holograms, but at least the base technology does not require a very powerful PC, only a relatively modern one.

Looking Glass has not stated how much this will cost, but interested parties can request a quote.
