I mentioned yesterday that it would be great if Arkane Studios could celebrate its 20th anniversary by announcing that a remaster of Arkus Fatalis is in the works. Unfortunately, that is not happening. But there is good news: for the next few days, the original "Arx Fatalis" will be free.

Arx was Arkane's first game, released in 2002, and while it is obviously not as polished as newer releases like Dishonored or Prey, it is very Arkane: the world is big and weird, there is plenty to do, and you can almost always You can proceed as you please. The story is a bit on the disjointed side, and the ending isn't great (especially the last boss fight, which is nearly impossible for a stealth-focused character), but despite those flaws, this is one of my favorite dungeon crawlers.

To get it, go to the Arkane 20 page on bethesda.net and sign up for the "Arkane Outsiders" mailing list. Once registered, the game will automatically be added to the Bethesda.net library and accessible from the Bethesda launcher. It consumes about 1 gigabyte of drive space and doesn't look so hot out of the box, but it supports resolutions up to 1920x1080, which isn't bad at all.

Another thing to note is that there are two control customization screens, but the arrows that switch between the two screens are a bit off, so getting to the second page can be tricky. Just move the cursor to near it so it glows and you're good to go. (And believe me. There is a lot going on there.)

Arx Fatalis is free to play through May 31 via Bethesda.net, and Bethesda has also published a very cool "Birth of a Dynasty" retrospective on the game, which you can read here. For more free games available now, check out our regularly updated list of free games available now.
