Earlier this month, we heard rumors that Cate Blanchett was in negotiations to appear in the upcoming film adaptation of Borderlands. Now Lionsgate has made it official: the rumors are true, negotiations have been successful, and Cate Blanchett is in.

"We are very fortunate to have the wonderful Cate Blanchett in 'Borderlands. We had a great collaboration in 'The House with the Clock on the Wall' and I believe there is nothing she can't do. From drama to comedy to action, Kate makes every scene sing," director Eli Roth said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. [Working with her is truly a director's dream come true and we feel very fortunate to be working with her again on an even larger scale. Everyone brings their A-game when working with Kate and I know we will be able to create another iconic character together in her already storied career."

"Iconic" is a word that gets thrown around a lot, and yet it may be a bit premature to mention it at this point. But there is no doubt that "Borderlands 3" is big right now, just as "Borderlands 3" was released last year and became the fastest-selling game in history for 2K Games. She is a critically acclaimed actress who has won two Academy Awards and three Golden Globes, but her roles as Galadrield in "The Lord of the Rings," the evil KGB Dr. Irina Spalko in "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," and Death in "Thor: Ragnarok" She has also played the role of Hera, the goddess of death, in several summer blockbuster films.

"Borderlands" is still in pre-production and it is unclear at this time when it will be released, but even so, Blanchett's presence will give the project both name recognition and credibility immediately.
