AMD's latest GPU driver fixes more lingering black screen issues

The black screen problem continues to be the bane of some Radeon graphics card owners. This makes updating GPU drivers even more important than otherwise, as new drivers bring multiple fixes. Such is also the case with AMD's new Adrenalin 20.5.1 driver currently available.

According to the release notes, the latest driver squashes four more specific black screen bugs. They are:

Most of the complaints about black screen bugs in AMD hardware have come from owners of Radeon RX 5000 series graphics cards. The complaints and fixes date back to at least December 2019, but it is not yet clear exactly why this is a lingering issue.

Just this month, AMD issued a request to Radeon owners to file bug reports with AMD rather than posting any issues on places like Reddit.

"Posting issues on Reddit or other community forums, while helpful, does not necessarily mean that we will be able to find your post or get enough information from it.

It is a tricky situation because it is difficult to diagnose whether the black screen problem is related to AMD hardware and drivers or to other parts of the system. This also tends to make people paranoid that any problem is somehow related, which is not always the case.

For example, some people have found that disabling Microsoft's "performance enhancement" game mode in Windows 10 prevents games from stuttering and freezing. This is not limited to AMD hardware, but also Nvidia GPUs.

In addition to the black screen bug, AMD's latest drivers fix many other issues. They include:

Besides bug fixes, the 20.5.1 driver package adds support for the Windows 10 May 2020 update, which began rolling out to PCs this week.

The drivers can be downloaded from AMD's Radeon software utility or obtained from AMD's website.
