Samsung's ultra-curved 240Hz gaming monitor, the G7, will be available this month

First announced at CES 2020, Samsung's Odyssey G7 gaming monitor was unveiled. Samsung claims that this 240Hz panel is the first 1000R of its kind and is a very curved gaming monitor. It is also G-Sync capable and supports FreeSync Premium Pro for optimal cross-hardware compatibility.

We first saw the Odyssey G7 at CES 2020 alongside the massive ultrawide Odyssey G9 in Samsung's vast exhibit hall. Both monitors have the new name Odyssey, which is now Samsung's subdivision gaming brand, so note the oddly nondescript logo.

The Odyssey G7 comes in two models, 27" and 32", both with the same 2,560 x 1,440 resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio, and QLED curved panel. In other words, the panels use Sammy's quantum dot technology, which improves color accuracy and peak brightness. As a result, the Odyssey G7 has a luminance of 600 cd/m2.

As is well known, Samsung excels at curved screens, and the Odyssey G7 is no different at 1000R (a smaller number means a curved screen). If you expect to sit a meter away from the screen, it's about right.

Don't worry. How many Odyssey G7s would you need to completely surround yourself 360 degrees? We did the math on a napkin and came up with the rough answer that it would take nine Odyssey G7s to completely surround you bezel to bezel. Perfectly reasonable for a flight sim rig.

For the gamer's taste, the Odyssey G7 has new lighting features to enhance the look of your desktop: a rear-core lighting system around the Vesa-compatible stand mount that can change colors, and two slightly flashier front matching spoilers are included. The cut is linear, a far cry from the subtle styling of this monitor's gaming monitor predecessor. But apparently this is what everyone wants, according to what gamers have told us.

According to Samsung, the Odyssey G7 will be available worldwide this month, at a grand price of £550 for the 27-inch and £630 for the 32-inch, according to pre-orders at Overclockers UK. Pricing in the U.S. has not yet been made official, but according to Amazon's pre-order list, the 32-inch model is likely to cost around $800.
