Sony postpones PlayStation 5 event scheduled for Thursday.

The PlayStation 5 event scheduled for this weekend has been postponed. In a statement released on Twitter, Sony acknowledged that some may be disappointed, but said now is the time to "hear from more important voices."

Sony's statement referred to the ongoing protests against police violence in cities across the United States and around the world following the May 25 killing of George Floyd by police officer Derek Shovin in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Many of the demonstrations that have taken place since then have resulted in violent crackdowns on protesters by police and National Guard units. Shovin has since been charged with second-degree manslaughter and third-degree murder.

Sony's E3 presentations are generally very console-specific, but often showcase multi-platform game releases. Also of note are comparisons between consoles and current and upcoming PC hardware releases.

Today, Electronic Arts postponed its planned announcement of "Madden NFL 21" and said that now is the time for people to "stand together and commit to change."
