General
For the first time, AMD is the CPU option in HP's revamped Omen 15 gaming notebook.

At this point, AMD probably doesn't need any further proof that the Zen 2 architecture is real. Be that as it may, HP's revamped Omen 15 gaming laptop is the first to adopt both AMD and Intel, and it has earned its wings not only from Intel, but also from AMD.

Specifically, the Omen 15 can be configured with a Ryzen 5 4600H or Ryzen 7 4800H processor, both based on Zen 2.

The Omen 15 also offers a Comet Lake-H option up to a 10th generation Core i7 10750H.

Prices start at an affordable $999 or $909, depending on which you choose; if you go with AMD, the entry model is $999 for a Ryzen 5 4600H, GeForce RTX 1650 Ti, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. In Intel's realm, for $999 you can get a Core i5 10300H with the same parts combination. Also, both have 1080p displays, but the Intel model is slightly brighter (300 nits vs. 250 nits). Incidentally, although not mentioned in the press release, the same Intel, 250 nits display can be configured on HP's website for $909.

These are modest configurations, and if your budget allows, you can opt for something larger. For example, here are some options:

There are many combinations, and of course prices will vary accordingly. In general, however, Omen 15 is competitively priced for the most part. Depending on your budget, you can configure the Omen 15 with up to RTX 2070 Super Max-Q, up to 32GB of RAM, up to 1080p@300Hz or 4K@120Hz displays, and up to 1TB of SSD capacity (there is also a RAID 0 option that is not required for storage).

HP has now redesigned the chassis to focus on appealing to a wider range of users (for work as well as play). It is also slightly (11%) thinner than last year's model at 0.89" (22.5 mm).

A peek at HP's website reveals that systems with Intel processors can be configured starting at $909; the AMD option will probably be available soon. Meanwhile, Best Buy's website has the only AMD option. It is priced at $1,349 and comes with a Ryzen 7 4800H, 16GB RAM, GTX 1660 Ti, and 1TB SSD.

In related news, HP has announced another first, the Pavilion Gaming 16, which HP says is similar to a 15-inch laptop because of its "micro-edge bezel," but in a slightly different size. Its actual size is 14.57 (W) x 10.33 (D) 0.93 (H) inches.

This one is Intel only and can be configured with up to a Core i7 10750H processor and up to an RTX 2060 Max-Q GPU. compared to the Omen 15, it is a lighter and less expensive gaming laptop with prices starting at $799.
