Sony's big PlayStation 5 event postponed to Thursday

Sony last week postponed a planned PlayStation 5 online event in light of protests in the United States and around the world against police violence and racism. Sony announced today that it will hold an event on June 11 to showcase "the future of gaming," at least as it exists on PlayStation devices.

The event, which will focus on the new PlayStation 5 game console, is outside of our normal scope of coverage, but is noteworthy for several reasons. Sony events often have at least one or two multi-platform game announcements, and it is fun to compare the new console to modern PC hardware, as we did last year when the PS5 was first unveiled.

There are also persistent rumors that Resident Evil 8 will finally be officially announced at this event: regular and reasonably reliable leaker Dusk Golem, who said in April that the next Resident Evil would be first-person and lean heavily on themes such as the occult, madness, and trust AestheticGamer, said on Twitter last week that he was "99% sure" that Resident Evil 8 would be at the public event, pointing out that all the games in the series were released last week when the PS5 event was originally scheduled to take place.

Sony did not specify where the event could be viewed, but it was initially leaked via a Twitch ad, so it will probably be available there, and also on YouTube.
