Humble Bundle Establishes $1 Million Black Game Developers Fund

Last week, the Humble Bundle announced plans to establish a $1 million fund aimed at helping black developers publish their games. Today, the company officially announced the Black Game Developer Fund, an annual program that will provide "funding, production, and marketing support" through Humble's publishing label.

"We want to help Black game developers increase their access to funding so they can make great games. This fund is for developers who do not currently have a publishing agreement for a specific game," the FAQ states.

"We offer multiple ways to support your team, including publishing your game, funding for you to self-publish your game, and start-up funding to build a prototype to pitch. $1 million is goal, not an upper limit. Depending on the status of the application, more or less funding may be provided. Funds will be allocated based on the individual needs of the project and projected success at launch.

To be eligible for funding, studios must be at least 50% owned and operated by people of African origin. Humble is seeking a panel of advisors from the black development community to help select games and provide feedback, and there are no restrictions on the types of games eligible for funding, except that they must be unreleased games, including early access.

Humble also said that other targeted funding programs may also be in the planning stages: "No further announcements at this time, but the Black Game Developer Fund is a starting point, not the limit, of our ambitions in the subject of racial equality . Thank you for your patience and support as we move forward."

Applications for consideration for funding through the Black Game Developer Fund or Humble's standard publishing assistance program can be made here.
