Resident Evil" becomes Capcom's first series to surpass 100 million units sold.

Capcom announced that the "Resident Evil" series has surpassed 100 million units for the first time in the company's 40-year history.

Along with the seven main games, the series has spawned numerous spin-offs, episodic games, and most recently several remakes. The last few years have seen the excellent "Resident Evil 7," which returns to the series' roots of slow-burning survival horror, but from a first-person perspective, and the remakes of "Resident Evil 2" and "Resident Evil 3," which we hailed as the best remakes of 2019.

"Resident Evil 3 Remake" was a disappointment, but generally feels like a revitalization of the series. There were significant declines with "Resident Evil 5" and "Resident Evil 6," but these were not reflected in sales figures, with both games being top sellers in the series. However, none of the newer games are far behind and are catching up. [Resident Evil 8: Resident Evil Village] seems to take a giant leap in a different direction, retaining the first-person perspective of Resident Evil 7: Resident Evil Village, but with witches, werewolves, and the intimidating castle overlooking the village that gives the game its title. It will be released in 2021.
