This rare portable 240Hz monitor can be reserved for $499

The portable gaming displays announced by Asus at CES are finally available for pre-order. [The ROG Strix XG17AHPE ($499 at B&H Photo) and XG17AHP ($599 at Amazon) have the same 17.3" IPS panel and a fast 240 Hz refresh rate.

Last month we reviewed a portable monitor without a tripod stand, which is lightweight (2.3 pounds), easy to use, and has a built-in 7,800mAh battery for about 3 hours of gaming startup (Asus claims up to 3.5 hours).

"The XG17 offers an excellent second screen experience that is easy to navigate without sacrificing color or speed," Jorge writes.

Of course, taking full advantage of the 240 Hz refresh rate is difficult and requires a powerful GPU. Still, only less demanding games, such as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, can achieve frame rates above 200 fps.

Still, for those who want something like this, can afford it, and are willing to pay a premium for a portable form factor, this is a nifty (if niche) product. To put the price in perspective, the Asus TUF Gaming VG279QM is a 27-inch G-Sync-enabled display with an IPS screen, 1080p resolution, and a refresh rate of 280 Hz (overclocked) for $399.
