EVE Online players can help scientists solve coronavirus

EVE Online's Project Discovery initiative is back, and after helping scientists study how human cells are made and identify exoplanets, now players are tasked with analyzing data to assist in coronavirus research.

Pilots can take time out from their normal work in space to play a simple mini-game mining human cell data. This data is acquired by flow cytometry and will be used to help scientists understand how COVID-19 affects different populations and types of cells. First, however, the cell population must be identified, and the player can help with that.

This mini-game allows players to track down groups of cell populations and earn in-game rewards. You do not need to understand the science behind it, but there is a tutorial that will show you how this can help you in your research.

CCP launched Project Discovery with Massively Multiplayer Online Science, leveraging the game's player base to support scientific research and working with McGill University, BC Cancer, individual scientists and collaborate with other organizations. It is hoped that the results from the analyzed data will lead to new discoveries and create new algorithms. [Foldit is a manipulation of protein chains to solve a puzzle that essentially allows anyone to try to design an antiviral protein; it is considerably more complex than the Project Discovery mini-game and is designed to be easy to pick up, although the more difficult mode involves designing a protein from scratch. designed to be easy to pick up.

Progress on Project Discovery can be tracked via updates from a team of computer scientists and bioinformaticians from McGill's School of Computer Science.
