Valve Index users can now virtually recreate their own rooms

Continuing its evolution to make it unnecessary to remove a VR headset, Valve recently released a new feature for Index users that allows them to accurately project the room around them into 3D space.

Called Room View 3D, the purpose of this feature is to provide a more accurate representation of the user's environment in those moments when the headset must be removed; Valve's announcement article does not go into detail about how this feature works, but we tried it People have speculated that multiple cameras on the Index are used to create a live 3D environment.

Most of the comments I've seen seem pretty impressed so far, despite some hiccups; Steam user rsk says Room View 3D is cool when it's working, but is currently "very unstable and unstable." While I'm excited about the new features, I'm sure I'd get confused very quickly if the world started shaking around me.

Perhaps the biggest drawback of Room View 3D is that it is a Valve Index exclusive. It would be great to see this feature cleaned up and one day become standard on VR headsets.
