Players of "Lord of the Rings" Online Gather in Memory of the Late Sir Ian Holm

Sir Ian Holm, who played Bilbo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings films and Frodo Baggins in the BBC radio version, died June 19 at age 88. He was mourned by players on several servers of Lord of the Rings Online, with some gathering at Bug End, Baggins' home, and others walking together to Rivendell to pay their respects around Bilbo in the game.

According to Redditor RoadrageWorker on the Belegaer server, "We gathered in front of Bag End and had fireworks so big that Lobelia didn't like them. The music played, we mourned, and we all wished Ian good luck on his final journey". A similar spontaneous group gathered at the Laurelin Server and, as sudo_rm_onering added, "from what I understand, during that gathering we basically broke the entire Shire (lol). And I couldn't agree more."

Standing Stones Games, developer of Lord of the Rings Online, has made Baggins' birthday quest playable through June 23. The Spring Festival is also back with an encore and will run through June 29.

Holm will also be remembered for his roles in many films, including "Aliens," "Brazil," and "The Sunshine of War." Peter Jackson has shared his memories of working with Holm in "The Lord of the Rings" on Facebook.

Thanks, Eurogamer.
