Browser game portal "Kongregate" no longer accepting new games

Kongregate has long been a godsend to bored students and working professionals stuck in dreary office jobs, and the browser-based gaming portal, launched in 2006, has amassed more than 128,000 games, a number that is unlikely to grow. The site announced that as of today it will no longer accept new games and will not be adding new badges (the site's equivalent of achievements).

The news was announced in an official announcement on the Kongregate forums. The announcement noted the imminent discontinuation of Flash on December 31 and the company's increasing focus on developing its own (primarily mobile) titles.

In the short term, the most dramatic changes on the site are the forums and social features, many of which will cease operations on July 22. Access to the existing library will be maintained and developers will be able to update their games, but without intervention, most of these games will likely be inaccessible by 2021 (unless preserved by an initiative such as Flashpoint).

"As part of our focus on game development, please note that we will have fewer resources to support Kongregate.com. That said, our support team will do its best to help players who are encountering issues within the game."

According to Gamesindustry.biz, several Kongregate employees tweeted about the company's sudden layoffs.

Kongregate launched Kartridge in 2018, a curated Steam-like portal designed to highlight indie games; Andy reports that the site has no upload fees or manual approval process.
