Criterion for "Need for Speed" releases free game jam project

Criterion Games, which recently took the steering wheel of "Need for Speed" again, is giving away many games for free. All of them were created in Criterion's in-house game jam, and now you can get all six of them.

Although Criterion is best known for racing games like NFS and Burnout, there are no cars in this group of games. There is, however, a bit of racing: in Steak 4, players race skateboards against vegetables and steaks to determine who is the champion of Criterion's kitchen. You can score tricks, humiliate your food, or face off against your friends in multiplayer. Arcadron Arena, a neon racer that pits you against other AI drones, is included.

For obvious reasons, this year's game jam is taking place remotely, with some games taking inspiration from the strange predicament we are in. QuaranTea, for example, puts you in the role of the manager of a bubble tea store, taking orders and preparing drinks while maintaining a healthy distance from your co-workers and patrons. Rock Hardcore, on the other hand, is a game in which you explore the caves beneath your home during lockdown, much like Spelunky.

"Daydream" is an unfinished project, but it's worth checking out if you like playing with monkey toys.

All six game jam experiments can be downloaded from Criterion's site. They are free, but Criterion asks that you consider showing your appreciation in the form of a donation to the British Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, or Show Racism the Red Card.
