Horizon Zero Dawn, PC Version Raises Prices

Horizon Zero Dawn is coming to PC next month, but those who didn't get it last week may have to shell out a bit more to see Alloy disassemble robots with a bow.

When Horizon Zero Dawn first launched in the UK, it cost £32.99 on Steam, but since then it has jumped to £39.99. There has been no shortage of people on Steam's forums complaining about similar price increases in various regions, A full list of price changes can be found on SteamDB.

In some cases, such as the UK prices, Steam is on par with the Epic Games Store, but some would-be players point out that EGS is now cheaper in their region. However, in some regions prices are inconsistent, with prices on EGS going up and prices on Steam not.

Prior to the price increase, there were large price differences between regions, which VPN users were able to take advantage of to obtain games at significantly lower prices than the normal prices in their home countries. For example, the original price in Turkey was the equivalent of £9, but is now around £32. This may be one of the reasons why Sony decided to raise the price.

Steam began supporting regional pricing a few years ago, although not in all countries; using a VPN to get games at a lower price is against Steam's terms of service, but people are still taking chances. For some games, Valve and publishers use geo-blocking to prevent the code from working in other regions, but the European Commission considers this a violation of EU antitrust law, which Valve is now challenging.

Raising prices to prevent the exploitation of regional differences would disproportionately affect people in those regions, making games prohibitively expensive. Valve has suggested this to publishers in the past, but it is not clear if this is what happened here. It is also possible that this was a mistake on Sony's part; it was always the case that prices were so high.

Horizon Zero Dawn is scheduled to be released on August 7,

and is expected to be available in the United States on August 8.
