Concept art for "Left 4 Dead" successor "Back 4 Blood" resurfaces.

It's been a while since we've heard anything about Back 4 Blood, but thankfully, the spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead doesn't appear to be turning in its grave. Developer Turtle Rock Studios (which was acquired by Valve during the development of Left 4 Dead and then spun off from Valve) has yet to reveal much about Back 4 Blood, but we can see one piece of concept art.

Back 4 Blood was announced in March 2019, but little is known about it since then. It's a co-op FPS that puts zombies back in the ground, has PvP, a campaign, a new universe, and no official connection to L4D. And that's about it. However, the concept art does give us some hints as to what to expect.

The presence of the fort indicates that it has been some time since the zombies first appeared. It's a makeshift one, covered in barbed wire and rusty corrugated iron, but it's large and quite elaborate for the early days of the zombie apocalypse. And given that Turtle Rock decided to showcase this first, it probably makes a lot of sense. Perhaps, like Taal's Horn Keep in Vermintide 2, it is a base where the party can prepare between missions.

The "Left 4 Dead" series is all about escape as the party tries to find a safe haven immediately after a virus has turned everyone into ravenous corpses, but judging by the concept art and the title "Back 4 Blood," the theme this time may be about fighting back. Instead of continuing to flee to evacuation points, they might patrol the area, securing it and chipping away at the hordes.

At this point, however, it is all speculation. We haven't even seen a screenshot yet. As for the trailer, Turtle Rock, the well-known development studio for Evolve, says that it is "currently in production."
