Rocket League players score 29 billion goals

Rocket League was released on July 7, 2015 and turns exactly 5 years old today. I was surprised by this news, as I feel like I've been playing car soccer for decades now. It truly felt like one of those games that instantly transcends its time.

Still, half a decade is a pretty long time: long enough for a player to score 29 billion goals, according to an infographic created by Psyonix.

That's a lot of goals. While the astronomical numbers are eye-catching, I suspect Psyonix may be exaggerating a bit. I asked a studio representative how they arrived at this number (was it an estimate or the actual number of goals recorded?), but no one was immediately available to comment, so I fired up some Windows calculator apps and saw for myself just how feasible this number was. In fact, the number is quite feasible.

For 29 billion goals to be scored in Rocket League, an average of 184 goals would need to be scored every second of every day for the past five years. This April, it has fluctuated to a high of 54,133 players. To achieve this number, it would only take 11,040 players every minute of every day, which, given the console's large audience, does not seem impossible.

I have personally contributed to 5,378 scores. My most recent favorite was a boostless Snow Day fakeout that forced an own goal. If you have a favorite goal in 29 billion, please post it in the comments.

Aside from the celebratory infographic, "Rocket League" is currently running an anniversary event. Players can earn items, experience, and balloons that can be used for Golden Egg gift packs by playing matches.

Psyonix also recently announced changes to the Rocket League Championship Series, now in its 10th season. Could this be the year you go pro?
