At least five half-life projects were cancelled before Alix.

Half-Life Geoff Keighley's "Alyx - Final Hours," a "multimedia experience" about the making of Valve's epic VR shooter, is now available on Steam. The documentary promises "an unprecedented, unvarnished look at the past decade inside Valve," and includes multiple cancelled projects (one of which was actually named Half-Life 3), as well as concept art for Alyx, "Valve Time" timeline, and interactive features including the Head Club SFX mixer.

Most notably, a full-fledged "Half-Life 3" was briefly in development in 2013-14; Valve wanted to combine procedural generation with a "crafting experience" to make it more replayable, and this idea was inspired by Left 4 Dead was partly inspired by Dead. However, it was ultimately dropped because the Source 2 engine that was originally being developed was not finished.

Several Half-Life-themed VR projects were also toyed with, including one similar to the Episode 3 synopsis shared by former Valve writer Marc Laidlaw a few years earlier, but were ultimately cancelled.

Other cancelled projects include the open-world Left 4 Dead 3, an Elder Scrolls/Dark Souls-inspired RPG codenamed "RPG," a Minecraft-style voxel game, Valve 's original VR headset "Vader."

While most of the team would like to create a new, complete Half-Life, there is some question as to whether Valve would want to tackle such a large project or continue to focus on VR for the time being. But the possibility is at least on the table. Phil Co of Valve said, "We've broken the ice, now we want to break it completely. 'We're not afraid of Half-Life anymore.'

Half-Life: Alyx - Final Hours is currently available on Steam for $10/£7/€8, and to be clear, no VR headset is required.
