Valve Employees Want to Build "Authentic" Half-Life Games, Not VR

Geoff Keighley's interactive "storybook" on Half-Life development: Alyx ends with a section on what's next for the Half-Life series According to Keighley, Valve's Half-Life team Most of them want to make non-VR games.

"Privately, most of the team expects that the next big game will really be a full-fledged Half-Life game made not for VR, but as a game accessible on all traditional gaming platforms," Keighley wrote.

However, there are doubts within the company as to whether Valve would commit to such a large development project. (It would be a bit odd if Valve were a "flat" company without a leader, as it has claimed to be (although it would be a guess, it is not really flat, and someone at the top would have to approve this sort of thing). Whatever form it takes, there is no doubt that more Half-Life awaits.

"I'm not afraid of Half-Life anymore," Valve designer Phil Co told Keighley.

"Going from [Half-Life: Alyx] to something new and bigger that will be even bigger is pretty exciting," designer and programmer Tejeev Kohli said.

Right now, it is possible that the next Half-Life is another VR project, but nothing has been confirmed; it may not be a VR game, but it may also be something that is not a big action-adventure game that is not VR. One last thing: Keighley also said that a "small team" at Valve began working on a "top secret" project near the beginning of 2018.

Half-Life: Alyx - Final Hours is available on Steam for $10 and offers Keighley's account of Alyx's development and what Valve was trying to do before the VR project got underway. Apparently, "Half-Life 3" was launched and then cancelled.
