Henry Cavill went the extra mile to make Gellert look filthy in "The Witcher"

One of the best scenes in Netflix's adaptation of The Witcher is, of course, Henry Cavill soaking in the bathtub, and PC Gamer's favorite meme reached new heights, so it was a nice bonus to see Cavill undressed. He liked to be filthy on purpose, and it seems he desperately needed that bath, too.

In a chat with Vanity Fair, Cavill detailed his journey from regular guy playing Superman to The Witcher.

"The costume crew was pretty scared of me by the end," Cavill said. Before the shoot, they would look at me and say, 'You need to get dirtier.' They had these little tiny ...... It's like a ball of tights rolled up into a ball, and there's dust in it. ...... and they come up to me with it and pat it. And I say, 'Guys, that's not enough. So I was standing outside in the rain. Sometimes I would roll around in puddles. Just to make it look like this character has lived in it."

Imagine this big, buff guy rolling around in the mud, wearing ridiculously tight pants and beautiful flowing hair, while the costume designer looks on with tears in his eyes. Someone must have filmed this. If you provide me with this footage, I'll give you a socially distanced high-five and write your name on the 2-liter bottle of Earn Blue I just bought.

He seems quite intent on portraying Geralt correctly, so much so that he is willing to risk damaging his eyes by continuing to wear his Witcher contact lenses. At first he was fine, but as filming began in the Canary Islands, volcanic dust began to irritate his eyes, which was exacerbated by the lenses.

"I literally had to hide in the shade every time we shot, and I had to force my eyes to stay open during scenes because they would burn. I knew I needed to be a little tougher."

"I was a bit more aggressive than I had been in the past.

Eventually, the ophthalmic technician had to demand that he remove his eyes, and he was prodded a bit. He was more concerned about looking different and keeping other actors away than he was about his eyes. We have to protect those peepers.

Season 2 of The Witcher will resume production on August 17 after a months-long hiatus due to the coronavirus; Netflix announced his return to work with a ditty about the chatty bard Jaskier.

Cheers, Eurogamer.
